RUGERSDORP, South Africa: A 28-year-old thief was mauled to death by tigers after robbing a cash desk at a nature reserve west of Johannesburg, South African police said on Sunday. The man, working with an accomplice, held up at gunpoint the entry kiosk at the Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve in Krugersdorp, stealing a mobile telephone, a wallet and a cashier's walkie-talkie. The two men, who were orginially taken to be tourists, ran off in different directions after being chased by an employee. One thief rushed towards a waiting car, throwing away the gun, while the other took a deadly path leading straight into the tigers' enclosure. After tranquilising the animals, police and nature reserve employees were able to enter the enclosure to find the dead man, with a fractured skull, a broken neck and rips on his back. The stolen goods were recovered from the man's clothes. His accomplice and the getaway driver were arrested late Saturday and are due to appear before a Krugersdorp magistrate, said Superintendent Melica Bezuidenhout.
