Emeryville police are investigating a freak accident in which a suspected homeless burglar's neck was crushed by a roll-up door early today.
"It appears to be an accident -- a strange way to die," said Emeryville police Sgt. LaJuan Collier. "This guy was trying to get in and got trapped."
The body of the unidentified homeless man was found a little after 1 a.m. by a worker at the Pak 'n Save at 3889 San Pablo Ave. He had no vital signs. Authorities said he had been dead only a short time.
The man apparently tried to break into the grocery store by prying up a locked metal roll-up door adjacent to the rear loading dock, Collier said. Employees were stocking shelves inside so no alarm sounded when the man partly lifted up the door.
As he tried to squeeze under the door, it fell on his neck, Collier said. The door pinned him and he was unable to lift it back up.
"The door came down on his carotid artery and killed him," Collier said.
Authorities were still trying to identify the victim, who was described as an apparently homeless African American man in his 40s.
