Rollie Noem, park superintendent, said two bulls involved in the separate attacks were acting instinctively.
"Neither bull ... exhibited any unusual behavior," he said. "The individuals involved, unfortunately, for whatever reasons, put themselves in danger by being too close to the animals." Killed in one attack was Ernest Barna, 76, of Allen Park, Mich. He was with a group of people photographing buffalo Thursday morning near the park's corrals on Wildlife Loop Road when a bull walked toward them, Noem said.
The others returned to their cars, but Barna stood his ground and continued taking pictures as the animal brushed past him and then attacked, the park official said.
"The bull turned, hooked him and threw him," Noem said.
Barna suffered injuries to his side and neck and was taken to Custer Community Hospital and then to Rapid City Regional Hospital for surgery. He died Friday night.
In another incident at the park, a Texas man suffered a deep cut to his arm in a buffalo attack on Thursday and needed stitches. Jack Knight, 87, was treated at a hospital and released.
