A 38-year-old Santa Ana man was in critical condition Friday at UCI Medical Center in Orange after paint thinner caught fire and the flames spread over his body, authorities said.
The man, whose name was not released, had been painting the kitchen of his mobile home in the 300 block of Euclid Street just before 9 p.m. Thursday, fire Capt. Randy Black said. The victim and a companion had cleaned up paint drops on the kitchen floor before he tried to light incense sitting on a shrine.
Paint thinner coating his fingers ignited, and the man thrashed about, kicking over a can of paint thinner, which also caught fire, Black said. The flames spread to his clothes.
The man tried to snuff the flames by removing his clothes and getting under a shower. Firefighters put out the flames using a chemical fire extinguisher, Black said.
