GASTONIA — A man died Friday night after walking in front of a train while talking with his girlfriend on a cell phone, police said.
Scott Withers, Donald Drive, Lot 36, was returning from Pope’s Mini Mart around 6:15 p.m. when he paused to let the westbound train pass near Fair Oaks Drive in Smyre.
When it had gone by, Withers turned to cross and was struck by the eastbound Norfolk Southern train.
"(The conductor) laid down on the horn, but he was mesmerized by the other train, or distracted by the phone, and I’m sure the noise was tremendous," Gastonia Police Sgt. Jimmy West said.
The train was travelling 47 mph and it took a little more than one-fifth of a mile to stop, West said.
"Witnesses said he was on a cell phone, and his girlfriend confirmed he was on the phone with her," West said.
Friends of Withers and residents of Cline Mobile Home Park gathered on Fair Oaks Drive as police investigated the death. Raymond Cline, who owns the park, said he had just talked to Withers about his rent.
"He was a good renter," Cline said. "He paid every week."
Neighbors and friends said Withers was engaged to be married, and a date had been set for next month. Some children who witnessed it alerted Cline.
"He was on a cell phone and he stepped in front of it," said Misty Morgan, 12.
Police believe alcohol may have contributed to Withers’ death. They found a cup with what smelled like beer in it nearby and the front of the train engine also smelled of beer, West said.
