Gasoline-soaked clothes in dryer lead to explosion
A Northwestside man learned a hard lesson on Sunday: Gasoline and electric clothes dryers don't get along.
The explosion that resulted from the man's attempt to use both at once put the man in the hospital and damaged the building in which he was trying to dry his clothes.
The explosion was reported to the Indianapolis Fire Department at noon Sunday. It occurred at Spring Hill Apartments, 6500 block of Spring Hill Way.
Firefighters said Victor Ruiz, 34, who lived at the apartment complex, had soaked clothes in gasoline to remove stains. Then he went to the complex's laundry room and placed the clothes, still soaked with gasoline, in an electric clothes dryer.
When Ruiz turned on the dryer, the fumes ignited, causing an explosion that blew out the laundry room's windows.
When firefighters arrived, they found Ruiz inside, suffering from what they described as minor first- and second-degree burns. Ruiz was sent to Wishard Memorial Hospital.
