DETROIT -- Police are investigating the death of a man who was electrocuted when he attempted to illegally attach car jumper cables to an electrical transformer on a utility pole to a generator inside a vacant house where he was staying, police said.
The 51-year-old homeless man was killed about 7 p.m. Friday in the 100 block of John R, east of Hildale. A unidentified man called police after finding the unconscious man lying on the ground in the alley behind the home, police said.
Police found a ladder leaning against a utility pole and the jumper cables dangling off the ladder. The cables stretched into the vacant dwelling where police said the man had been living.
Inside the vacant home was a generator, a mattress, blankets and several cans of soup.
Police said it appears while the man was on the ladder he must have gotten entangled with the live power lines. He fell off the ladder onto the roof and then landed in the alley.
The name of the man has been withheld pending identification and the notification to his family.
