Flickin' his Bic

I didn't personally witness the main feature of this story, but I did witness events
preceding and following it. When I was doing plumbing in North Carolina,
any of the company vehicles that needed filling up were taken to a gas station
first thing each morning. There was one fellow, Bobby, who was always a jokester.
As everyone was filling up, he would find an excuse to pretend to take offence,
and saying things like "Oh yeah, you don't talk about my friend that way!"
he would take out his cigarette lighter and spark it several times near a gas tank.
He did this to me once, and I warned him that this could catch up with him,
but he dismissed the thought. It caught up with him just a few weeks later.
From the reports I heard, he managed to set a trashcan and his leg on fire.
His helper saw the fire and almost got hit by a car in his eagerness to escape.
Fortunately, others from the shop grabbed three fire extinguishers
and quickly put the fire out.
Bobby returned to work a few days later visibly shaken, and having learned very well
the dangers of igniting sparks near gasoline fumes.
A couple weeks later I saw him and his helper amusing themselves
by seeing how close they could throw knives at each other. Submitted on 01/18/02
