ajor parts of the swedish village Varnhem was destroyed after an exercise of the lokal firebrigade.
The firebrigades task was to burn down an old barn. They took the chance to turn it into an exercise neglecting a strong gusty wind towards the village.
The wind spred burning wooden shingles from the roof of the barn out over the village setting 21 buildings along a trail of 4 kilometers ablaze.
It took firebrigades from four cities one day to put the fires out.
Among the buildings were 1 farm including a a barn with 130 pigs. 20 people lost their homes.
Damages were estimated to 10 millions swedish kronas ($ 1.000.000)
The chief of the firebrigade was prosecuted for negligence constituting a public danger and was sentenced to a suspended sentence and fines.
