Arlington County Police are investigating the death of a teenager who fell more than eight stories down a chimney in an Arlington apartment building, a police spokesman said.
Arlington police spokesman Jim Page said a group of teenagers were videotaping themselves on the roof of the Wakefield Towers Apartments at 4301 Columbia Pike last night when the death occurred. A 17-year-old youth apparently climbed up a metal ladder on a brick structure that housed two chimneys. Police believe he fell feet first down a 97-and-a-half foot shaft Tuesday around 9 p.m., Page said. Police and fire and rescue officials responded today to a 5 a.m. call and found the 17-year-old's body at the bottom of the shaft in the building's boiler room, Page said.
Police are interviewing three others, all aged 18, who were at the scene when the death occurred, he said.
"We don't know exactly how it happened, but we don't expect any foul play," said Page.
The name of the deceased youth was not immediately available and the investigation is continuing.
