speed sign kills speeder

Driving too fast for the weather conditions — and crashing into a sign warning about the dangers of speeding — likely caused a fatal collision, say police.

A 19-year-old was killed and three teenagers were injured when the Acura Integra he was driving southbound along Blackfoot Tr. Saturday at 11:15 p.m. lost control on the snow covered road near Southland Dr.

Police say the car was driving at a high rate of speed and passing other vehicles, changing lanes back and forth.

They say the driver lost control of the car, which left the road to the right, travelled across the median and struck a sign post mounted on the median.

The impact moved the concrete blocks attached to the sign, which reads “Speeding 10 km/h over the limit — risk of injury or death increases 73%.”

Traffic Staff Sgt. Paul Stacey said speeding without accounting for weather conditions is a factor.

“We have some witnesses who have him cutting through traffic,” he said.

“The speed is a large contributor but so are the slippery road conditions because he just lost grip on the road and had no control of his vehicle anymore.”

Calgary fire crews had to pull all four out of the car.

The driver was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Three passengers, who Stacey said are 15, 16 and 17, were taken to hospital in stable condition.

Definitely Toss: Bystanders Hurt
Thanks, Steve, but the three injured passengers are considered hurt bystanders so we can't accept this. The driver is solely responsible for the safety of the passengers in the car. The passengers had absolutely no control over the crash that injured them. Thanks just the same.

What Bruce said. The only passenger-injured ones we have ever taken were when the passenger was an active participant in the stupidity. Such as when two people decided to switch drivers. While the car was moving. On the highway. And the passenger tried to climb over the top of the vehicle to get to the driver's seat.
