Cave Diving takes father and son

2013 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Darrin Spivey (35) and son Dillon Sanchez (15) died Christmas day 2013 in Eagles Nest underwater cave system. Eagles Nest is considered an advanced dive.

Spivey was certified to dive, but was not cave certified. Sanchez was not even a certified diver.

Spivey was found at 127 down, Sanchez at 67 feet down. They almost made it back to their bailout bottles, but those did not contain enough gas for their proper decompression anyway.

Going past signs that warn that cave diving is dangerous, both above and below water, the rescue divers reported that the dive computers of the 2 showed a max depth of 233 feet. Both divers are shown wearing double tanks and were said to have dived air.

Apparently, Sanchez ran out of air first, because Spivey had deployed his long hose for his son to breath on.

Spivey appears to have violated the following dive rules / safety precautions: 1. Diving past level of training 2. Diving wrong gas (air at 233 feet - wow, talk about narced!) 3. Not using a dive line (?)

Reel not in photo 4. Not enough dive lights (?) None in photo 5. Not trained in proper gas management 6. Diving doubles while being untrained in their use 7. Diving past recreational depth limits without tech training 8. Not leaving a proper dive plan with people not diving

Sanchez also violated:

1. No dive training at all. 2. Diving past Open Water depth limits without deep training 3. Bailout bottle in photo had Nitrox sticker, but not Nitrox trained 4. Normally, you don't try new gear at a difficult site, you try it in the pool instead, then maybe an easy dive.
