Torch & Fireworks Don't Mix?

2013 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Two men, Lucas Burke, 21, and Ethan Keeler, 20, were attempting to break into a safe at New Yard Landscaping in Hopkinton, N.H., in October 2013. It is thought they were seeking drug money.

To make their job go faster, they decided to use a quick entry method: An oxyacetylene torch.

Oxyacetylene torches, what with being hot and all, the inside of the safe quickly got to an 'unsafe' temperature. At that point, one of the things in the safe, a large collection of fireworks, became really unsafe when they exploded.

“I heard the boom first and then immediately felt the tremor,” said Janice Farenwald, who lives close to the explosion site, according to CBS Boston. “There was definitely an odor that came through the window, I could tell something was burning, so I thought something must have exploded.”

According to the police report, the explosion “blew their bodies apart.”

An investigation is still ongoing, according to New Hampshire State Fire Marshal J. William Degnan.
