Polish Solo Climber Falls 1000 ft

2013 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Polish soldier Sebastian Kinasiewicz, 32, was in Oregon for training on operating military drones. On a Sunday morning, he decided to climb 11,249 foot Mount Hood, although he had no previous climbing experience.

Thousands of people climb Mount Hood every year, but very few climb in August, due to the extreme hazard of crevasses and rockfall at this time of year. Kinasiewicz followed a challenging route usually used only by experienced climbers. He apparently managed to reach the summit, but on the way back down, he fell in an area called Hourglass Chute.

Rescuers spotted his body on Tuesday, but could not reach him, because he had landed in an area too dangerous to access. Searchers reported boulders the size of small cars were landing in the area.

A group of hikers saw Kinasiewicz on his ascent, and took what are probably the last photos of him. Other photos from their trip report illustrate the condition of the glaciers this late in the summer. Would you hike past this without a climbing partner and some serious training on crevasse rescue? http://www.portlandhikers.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=16697

Definitely Toss: Too Common
Thanks, Rebecca, but people climbing, hiking, etc. beyond their means is rather commonplace. Here's a similar story from our archives: http://darwinawards.com/slush/201111/pending20111114-185103.html
