With God As My Co-Pilot

2013 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

6 august 2005, Off the coast of Sicily| Under almost all circumstances pilots handle air emergencies with professionalism, knowledge, and common sense. The pilots of Tuninter flight 1153, however, were lacking in all three categories.

Unfortunately, pilot Shafik and co-pilot Ali faced a double-engine failure. This is a relatively rare event, but nonetheless an event for which all pilots are trained to deal with. Luckily for these two pilots, an airport with a long runway was well within range on the island of Sicily. They had training, and a checklist with instructions to help them. It was a very doable landing, despite the lack of engine power, as all 10 pilots who re-created the flight in a simulator made the landing safely. However, for some mysterious reason, the pilots failed to make the landing.

Upon raising the "black box" cockpit recorder the reason for them being unable to make the landing became clear. The pilots, instead of handling the emergency, started praying aloud and completely ignored the emergency procedures, AS THEIR PLANE WAS GOING DOWN. By the time they had finished they had missed their window to land on sicily, and were forced to land the plane in the ocean.

They not only failed to fly the plane, but ignored the emergency procedures that

A) was written down for them in a book they had within easy reach in the cockpit B) had a complete checklist, and instructions on what to do (in case they forgot any or all of their training)

C) was the same book they used for take-off, and landing every single flight and D) they had plenty of time to read.

Shafik and Ali did not cause the engine failures, but when given an impetus, they displayed incomprehensibly stupid actions.

ignoring an obvious, and manageable emergency both pilots knew about is a feat unsurpassed by any other flight crew. Given any somewhat competent crew the plane, and pilots were more than very likely to make a safe landing at an airport with full emergency services. As a result, Ali deserves A darwin award, While Shafik, who survived the crash, deserves an honorable mention.

Definitely Toss: Bystanders Hurt
Thanks, but seeing as there were 23 injuries and 16 fatalities in this crash we simply can't accept this story. All those victims are innocent bystanders who had no control whatsoever over their fate.
