man crushed to death cell phone

2013 Reader Submission

By Rosemary Regina Sobol Chicago Tribune reporter

10:55 p.m. CDT, July 31, 2013

A 56-year-old Palatine man was crushed to death by a trash compactor as he searched for his missing cell phone, authorities said.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office found that Roger Mirro, of the 200 block of South Clubhouse Drive in Palatine, died of multiple crushing injuries from being trapped inside a trash compactor on Tuesday. Mirro’s death was ruled an accident, according to the medical examiner's office.

Authorities responded to investigate a report of a missing person at the Clubhouse Drive address about 9:30 p.m., according to Palatine police.

When officers arrived, a woman who lives there told police she couldn’t find her 56-year-old husband, who should have been home at that time, Deputy Chief Alan Stoeckel said in a statement. Stoeckel called the death “a terrible accident.”

The woman, whose name was not released, said she last spoke with her husband in a phone conversation as she left work, telling him she was going out with her friends, police said.

When she got back home about 4 1/2 hours later, she couldn’t find him and a neighbor informed police that he last saw the man about 6:30 p.m. when the man came to his apartment, asking for a key to the trash room in the lower-level parking garage, according to police.

The man told his neighbor that he lost his cell phone, and he thought it may have dropped down the garbage chute, police said.

Officers searched the underground parking garage and focused on the garbage room, where they learned a lock had been removed from the door so access could be gained.

When the officers entered the garbage room, they noticed a ladder propped up alongside the trash compactor, and the missing man’s body inside it with obvious signs of trauma caused by the trash compactor, according to police.

Initial findings indicate the incident to be an accident, police said. The medical examiner’s office and Palatine authorities are investigating.

Definitely Toss: Too Common
Thanks, Eric, but we have lots of stories involving trash compacters, dumpsters, etc. Granted most involve people sleeping, passing out drunk, or hiding from the authorities in them when they get crushed, but they all have the same basic plot.
