Overdosed on pesticides

2013 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Their article:

WATSONVILLE, Calif. —A 25-year-old man died in Watsonville Community Hospital early Monday morning after he accidentally overdosed on farm pesticides.

A Santa Cruz County Coroner identified the man fatally poisoned by pesticides as Edward Lundberg.

On Sunday, Lundberg found a plastic baggie on the ground that was filled with pills, firefighters said. The baggie was near a farm on Airport Boulevard and Holohan Road.

He wanted to get high off drugs, so he ate the pills, firefighters said.

Lundberg became very ill in the parking lot of a Safeway store on Freedom Boulevard because the pills were actually pesticide pellets.

His friend called 911 at 4 p.m., and when Lundberg arrived at Watsonville Community Hospital's emergency room, he began vomiting.

The hospital's staff did not know what he was throwing up and debated whether they should declare the emergency room a hazardous materials zone.

Lundberg died at 1 a.m. A coroner said the pesticides pellets that Lundberg consumed contained aluminum phosphide, which is used to kill rodents such as gophers, ground squirrels, and moles.

Aluminum phosphide pellets react with moisture to create lethal phosphine gas.

Definitely Toss: Lacks Excellence
Sorry, Kyle, but idiots eating or drinking random unknown substances to get high has happened many a time and been submitted. Considering some chemical poisons can be as bad going up as coming down and the particular nature of this pesticide, I'm nudging toward possible Hurt Bystander for the ER staff, as well. Thanks anyway, and submit again!
