Most Unique Living Darwin

2013 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

So a woman, now reaching her forties, has lived a life of bad choices. Despite having two highly intelligent parents, (father even has a top .5% IQ score), somehow the genes crashed and left her lacking what they both have. Drugs and alcohol in her youth, dropping out of school and getting pregnant at 17. Cigarettes throughout life, among other terrible health choices. Running into bankruptcy twice, despite it being easily preventable; and hooking up with men that were abusive to her and her children.

Is that all? Hardly! Other, more dangerous incidents include:

Running a car into someone's home. Managing to accidentally set her car on fire, as well as a sofa when she fell asleep smoking. Too much lighter fluid on a grill. Staying in a cabin after finding two venomous snakes inside, and seven in the neighboring cabin (more were found inside the next morning). Ignoring a bees nest in the wall, when she's allergic to bee stings, until the point the bees were swarming into the house. Carrying things up and down clearly rotten stairs when there was alternate path (the stairs eventually collapsed). Clipping branches around a power line despite seeing sparks.

So how did she become a living Darwin? Well, her poor decisions lead to a health problem that required her to have surgery preventing pregnancy.

But she has two daughters! Doesn't that mean the genes remain?

That's where this becomes especially unique.

It might have been the case, but her choice in men caused one daughter... caused me to inherit specific mental illnesses from my father. Upon discovering some of these illnesses are proven to be genetic and will surely pass on to any children I have, (not to mention my mother's stupidity) I willfully chose to have sterilization surgery. The other daughter (who sometimes shows our mother's inclination towards bad decisions) plans to as well as soon as she has money, due to being unable to handle the significant stress that would come from having a child and because, in her own words, she doesn't want to risk another generation having our mother's stupidity.

So my mother's poor decisions have lead to health problems that ruined her ability to have children and caused BOTH her daughters to CHOOSE to be sterile just to prevent those genes from passing on!

Thanks for the submission, Ann, but after reading it I'm inclined to toss it for a few different reasons. For one, many of the situations you describe (the sofa catching fire, the grill, etc) are rather commonplace and you'll find virtually identical stories in the archives. For another we don't consider situations like mental illness and abusive relationships to be amusing. The other moderators may differ with me on this though, so let's see what they have to say.

I concur with Bruce. Neither you nor your sister deserve a Darwin for what was clearly not your fault!!!
