Tagger Gets Poetic Justice

2013 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

How many of us have cycled, run, skated along verdant routes only to find graffiti spoiling the experience?

It's never funny when someone loses his life but since this guy had glass etching materials (usually includes hydrofluoric acid) which was found on the window sill of part of the building, he apparently intended to wreck part of an area I consider some of the more decent part of Sacramento.

An arrest, conviction and a spot on the 6:00 news of someone having to clean up after his or her "art" is far better for all concerned.

But that failing, stopping themselves from committing the crime again through serious miscalculations and lack of proper tools, removing them from the gene pool, also does the tax paying public a service.

(I hate to be so blunt but ... read the story and decide for yourself if it's too blunt)

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – A man who was found dead hanging by a rope off an 18-story Sacramento high-rise appears to have been a graffiti tagger, Sacramento police said Monday.

Fire Battalion Chief Marc Bentovoja said the man appears to have died accidentally of asphyxiation when he created a harness from the rope and lowered himself down the east side of the office building.

"From everything we can tell, he didn't have any special rope rappelling equipment on, climbing equipment or anything like that," he said. "He appeared to be looped into the rope."

(Story Author -- I think this means his own weight tightened the rope around his rib cage and like a boa constrictor, mercilessly did its work)

A police department dispatch supervisor said Monday afternoon that investigators found a can of spray paint and a tool for etching glass on the part of a balcony where the ropes were anchored.

It's unclear how long the body had been hanging four floors from the top of the nearly 240-feet building.

Police and fire crews responded after receiving a call at 7:44 a.m. Monday. Rescue personnel were seen rappelling down the side of the building to check on the man but he was already dead. The body was retrieved shortly after 9 a.m.

The coroner's office will conduct an autopsy to determine the official cause of death. It is not releasing the man's identity pending notification of next of kin.

Bentovoja said the man did not appear to work for the building and investigators were reviewing building security cameras to determine how he got in.

(He may not have worked for the building -- was he a disgruntled employee or former tenant? If the leasing office was wondering where any other property damage was coming from ... they now know which resident to dock it from the deposit)

Formally named the 1201 K Tower, the building houses offices for lobbyists, public relations businesses and law firms that do business two blocks away at the Capitol.
