Search crews in rural Tennessee have found the body of a man who fell an estimated 2,500 feet to his death after the cockpit canopy of his airplane opened.

According to the news article, the experienced pilot was test-flying an airplane that he was planning to purchase from the co-pilot. During the flight, the canopy opened in flight, to the surprise of the two pilots. However, the experienced pilot flying the plane, forgot one of the most important rules of physics: For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Thus, when the canopy opened, while the control stick was being pushed forward, while the plane's nose was being aimed downward into a nosedive...

“They found him in a tree line, not too far off the road,” about a half-mile from a volunteer fire station, said a spokesman for the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office.

He said that, before confirming reports that the man was not wearing his safety harness and that the plane had gone into a nosedive at the time of the accident, that he would have to wait until the National Transportation Safety Board completes an investigation.

Emergency personnel were called into the search for the missing man after his co-pilot was able to fly the plane back to the airport after the accident, sans one potential Darwin Award winner.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: If the NTSB determines that the seat belt malfunctioned rather than not being worn, then it's simply horrible luck and isn't Darwin worthy. However, if they confirm their suspicions...)

Sorry, Peter, but this sounds like an accident, and even someone experienced can panic if caught by surprise. The other moderators may differ. Thanks anyway, and submit again.

I'm inclined to vote with Candi on this (at least for now). As you indicated the ultimate outcome depends a lot on how the NTSB determines how this accident happened. Until they render a decision it's just too soon to vote for this. Thanks just the same, Peter.
