Bloody Burglar

A MAN who bled to death after his friends abandoned him following a break-in gone wrong could have been saved if they had stayed to help.

Reedon Jack Santo, 23, died in hospital early yesterday after he and two others broke into the Riverview Tavern at Riverside Gardens about 1.45am.

Mr Santo severed an artery and began bleeding profusely after he smashed a glass pane at the pub.

He struggled in the direction of a nearby stolen car he and his friends were believed to be travelling in before collapsing in a pool of blood on the grass about 50m from the hotel.

His mates who were involved in the break-in had already fled the scene and were still on the run last night.

It is understood that two family members who became aware of the incident rushed to his aid and drove a critically ill Mr Santo to the Townsville Hospital.

He was pronounced dead at 2.45am.

James Cook University trauma care expert Professor Geoffrey Dobson yesterday said the Vincent man could have survived if his friends had stayed to help and render medical attention.

"The first thing they do ... is to work to stop the bleeding," he said. "You would put pressure on the site of the blood loss and maintain that pressure and then you would seek help by phoning triple-0."

He said that running 50m would have hastened death.

"You certainly wouldn't get the patient to go running away doing exercise while his heart is pumping blood out of his arm," he said.

Mocha Mecca owner said he had only been broken into once in the 2 1/2 years since he opened his coffee shop.

"It's terrible what's happened," he said. "This is a great area."

Townsville CIB officer-in-charge Detective Senior Sergeant Chris Hicks said the two people who took Mr Santo to the hospital were co-operating and police were trying to find the other offenders.
