Dumb crooks, dumb death

2012 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

In 1987 Craig Minogue was in Pentridge prison, near Melbourne in Australia. He was about to be found guilty of the murder of policewoman Angela Taylor, who was horribly burned through the detonation of a bomb. Craig and seven friends didn't like the conditions in the maximum security section and decided to arrange their own form of protest. They sealed the doors and stacked bedding against them. They covered the windows so they could not be seen and then ripped piping from the walls to use as breathing tubes. They then set their area alight...five should be posthumously awarded Darwin awards and Craig plus two others were rescued, narrowly escaping his own award. He lived to get a minimum term of twenty-eight years; strangely to my thinking, anyway, he wasn't given any extra time for arranging the destruction of property which once again led to loss of life...!!! I believe he deserves an honourable mention for trying, though.

Definitely Toss: Bystanders Hurt
Theres a bit more detail to these events on the wikipedia page for Minogue: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_Minogue. After reading that I feel it's appropriate to toss this due to our hurt bystanders rule. That article indicates that 5 people died and 4 were injured in the fire. Unless ALL nine of these men agreed to set the fire and were aware of the dangers then at least some of them would be considered hurt bystanders. Thanks just the same, Davida.
