In Bicton, witnesses say two men were attempting to elude police when the cars they were driving crashed at the intersection of Harris and Pembroke streets at Bicton last night, killing one of them instantly. Police say the smash followed the earlier assault and robbery of a 50-year-old man at nearby Point Walter. The dead man has been identified as a 28-year-old from Willagee. Police allege he was involved in the attack along with an 18-year-old man from Munster and that they fled the scene in different cars. Bicton resident Stephen Pickford captured the smash on a video camera he had pointed at the intersection.

He said he had foreseen the tragedy because hoons frequently sped down the suburb's wide streets. Police have since seized the footage. "It was like an explosion,'' Mr Pickford told ABC radio.

Police alleged the two men had earlier assaulted the man at Point Walter before stealing his electric mountain bike. The 18-year-old fled the scene in a Holden Commodore, while the 28-year-old drove off in a Holden Astra. Police saw the Commodore and chased it briefly after an unsuccessful attempt to pull the driver over. After the chase was aborted, the car wound through the back streets of Bicton and was spotted again. The Commodore went through a stop sign and t-boned the Astra, police said. It's understood officers engaged the Commodore in a second brief pursuit before the crash, but witnesses said they were driving in a controlled manner at a reasonable speed. They said the crash was horrific, with the smashed Astra propelled 30 metres down the road before hitting four paperbark trees. "The car basically disintegrated,'' Mr Pickford said. He said the trees saved he and his wife's lives as they sat on their front verandah watching the drama unfold. The Commodore careered 50-60 metres down the street after the impact before spinning around, he said. The 18-year-old driver tried to run away but was chased by neighbours and pinned to the ground. Residents had been calling for speed humps and roundabouts in the area for some time, Mr Pickford said. "We knew this would happen,'' he said. "People quite regularly go through that stop sign.'' The surviving man is expected to appear in Fremantle Magistrates Court later today charged with several offences including dangerous driving causing death and aggravated robbery.
