Hunting the Huntsman (updated)

2012 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

The 19-year-old male youth camp leader in the New South Wales Southern Highlands had a problem. First of all, there was a large Huntsman spider within his territory, the Attunga Country Campsite. The Huntsman is listed by the Australian Museum as being a relatively harmless species. A normal person might not see this as a problem, but as an alpha male, he could not allow other species to invade his turf. This invasion would be treated as a hostile act of war.

As the spider, ignorant of the danger it was in, explored the wall, the man quickly surveyed his surroundings. He did not have a flyswatter, nor a newspaper to ball up and whack it with.

At this point, there were still many viable options to take. He could A: Ignore the spider, B: Run away from the spider, or C: Whack the spider and kill it with his palm.

The man wisely went with option D: and struck out as hard as he could at the spider... with his leg. This action effectively terminated the spider and established his place in the animal kingdom. The resulting impact also broke his leg in two places.

NRMA CareFlight said the teenager was flown to Liverpool Hospital in a stable condition from a property 25km west of Mittagong after the incident.

''He was [looking] sheepish but he was in significant pain and he was facing the barrier of difficult road access," said Greg Ohlsson, the pilot of the helicopter.

''He was a nice guy, he was very polite and obviously embarrassed.

''He said the spider was a huntsman, one of the largest he'd ever seen, which is why he kicked it.'' Given that he knew the species of the spider and was used to outdoor activities, it is safe to assume he also knew this particular type of spider was perfectly harmless, yet deployed (painful) force regardless.

Mr Ohlsson said the man's friends were concerned for his health but described the camp atmosphere as "light-hearted" due to the cause of the injury.

''They wished him well and told him to hurry up and get well, so he could come camping again.''

The spider's relatives were not available for comment.

Thank you for the additional information, Joseph. This doesn't really say Darwin to me, however. There's still no reason why he hurt his leg so badly. The other moderators may differ. Thank you, and submit again!

I have to agree with Candi on this. There still seems to be something missing to me...
