Woman cut in half on runway

2012 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Some people just aren't patient. The lack of this characteristic can nowhere be better illustrated than on public roads and horror that is public transport. It's an unfortunate (and surely irritating!) fact that people around the world have to deal with.

Some people take impatience to an entirely new - mind-numbingly ridiculous - level.

An illustration of this would be a South African woman, somewhere in her 50's, who we will call Sue. She brazenly tried her luck in crossing - not a highway or busy street - but an airfield landing strip.

Having done their morning woodcutting, Sue and two friends were tired and thought taking a shortcut through the Ermelo airfield would shave a few minutes off their trip home.

Prompted by the approach of a light aircraft (a Mooney single-engine) coming down to land, the three hastened across the landing strip.

Sue wasn't as lucky as her two friends, who actually made it across. She was mercilessly hacked in twain by the sharp edge of evolution (in this case, the left wing of the aircraft).

The pilot was luckily uninjured, but his plane was still damaged after having 'separated' upper-Sue from lower-Sue.

The local authorities stated that there would be 'an investigation' into the accident... It is sure to be quite brief.

Two points of interest to be gleamed from this story:

1. Age does not necessarily bring wisdom 2. Patience is not only a virtue, but a trait necessary to ensure survival.

Thanks, Franco, but aside from this story involving an airplane I consider it to be all to similar to all the stories we get involving people crossing roads or train tracks and getting struck by cars, trains, etc. This just isn't different enough for me to consider it worthy of an award. Thanks just the same.
