Prince Frosty

2012 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Hi I’m a longtime fan of your site and finally found a case to submit: In February 2012 Prince Friso of Orange, the second son of Dutch queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, made ski holidays in Austria. Although there have been multiple avalanches in the area he stayed during the last few days and despite the avalanche warnings by Austria authorities, on 17 February 2012 the Dutch prince decided to go skiing anyways. He even thought it would be a good idea to ski off the marked pistes. Shortly after midday he was hit by an avalanche burring him for 15-25 minutes. He was reanimated for 50 minutes which, according to his doctors is a long, might have been too long. He suffered massive brain damages due to his accident and remains in a coma. He may never regain consciousness. No one else was injured in this accident. I think this is a great candidate for the Darwin Award as he features the classic combination of underestimating nature, overestimating one’s own abilities, ignoring warning signs, and of course a lot of individual stupidity.

If not for this Prince Friso of Orange could also deserve an honorable mention for proving that an Orange can evolve into a vegetable.

Sorry, David, this kind of stupidity is too common today. It's idiotic, but not spectacularly so. Thanks anyway, and submit again!

Definitely Keep: For Darwin's Eyes
I'm not sure that I'd zap this one right away! Firstly, this fellow was apparently of very high intelligence and well-regarded as such. Secondly, the Austrian authorities gave more than ample warning, which most people apparently heeded. Thirdly, he strayed off the beaten path, and all for the "thrill of it". We could call it really bad luck, but it would seem that the good Prince invited it to happen. One second of bad judgement and now a terrible loss for the Netherlands. Just the same, I will let Darwin and my fellow moderators cast the final vote!

I disagree with James on this. Just a few weeks ago 3 expert skiers in Washington were killed by an avalanche in very similar circumstances. If highly intelligent people who know the dangers are willing to risk their lives this way on such a regular basis then I consider it to be too common. thanks just the same, David.
