Kin of teen who died tagging boxcar

2012 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Art was life for a teenager killed by a train Sunday morning while tagging a stopped boxcar on the West Side, family members said. Vincent Sauceda III liked to draw dinosaurs as a little boy, and at 17, his favorite medium was graffiti art with spray paint, his cousin Gabriel Sanchez, 33, said. Sauceda was struck by a Union Pacific train as he bent down to retrieve spray paint that he'd left on the tracks, the locomotive crew who sounded a horn told San Antonio police. The accident on Union Pacific's tracks on General Hudnell Drive near U.S. 90 around 11:15 a.m. caused multiple blunt force injuries, and Sauceda was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Bexar County medical examiner's office. “Just like any other young, typical graffiti artist, he just wanted to get his name out there, wanted to be known,” his older brother, Raymond Sanchez, 24, said. “He'd done it in public places and on trains before. I'd warn him not to, but I guess I moved out and no one was around to keep an eye on him.” Sauceda's parents went out to breakfast that morning and he didn't want to go, his cousin said. He wasn't home when they returned, but no one knew he had gone to the track less than a mile away. Family members said he was a homebody who kept away from gangs and drugs. He had a “wild imagination” and worked with all types of painting in his backyard. He spray-painted the fence at his house and, with permission, painted a wall at the Tattoo Maze. Visitation will be held at Castillo Mission Funeral Home at 520 N. General McMullen Drive at 3 p.m. Wednesday. The procession will depart from the funeral home the next morning for a 10:30 a.m. burial at San Martin de Porres Catholic Church at 1730 Dahlgreen. Raymond Sanchez said he hopes his brother's death will discourage other graffiti artists from tagging at railroad tracks. “You don't mess with public places like that,” he said. “Because it happens, you know. It's a big risk you're taking.”

Definitely Toss: Too Common
Thanks, Suhail, but train/pedestrian collisions are simply way too commonplace. There are over 2000 every year in the US alone and we hear about lots of them. While I don't recall any recent stories involving taggers, we have plenty of stories in the archives of people walking, jogging, riding bikes & ATV's, sleeping, and even having sex on tracks and getting struck.
