Train hits vehicle, driver of SUV injured

A 23-year-old woman driving an SUV stopped her vehicle on the train tracks at Plank Road and Choctaw Drive, stayed parked there, turned up the music inside the vehicle and was hit by a train Monday morning just before 8 a.m.

The driver was partially ejected after the train hit the vehicle and knocked it over on the tracks, Baton Rouge Police Cpl. L’Jean McKneely said.

McKneely said police are unsure why the woman stopped and parked on the tracks.

The driver was taken to Baton Rouge General Medical Center with moderate to serious injuries, McKneely said.

A man and three children also were inside the SUV but they were not injured, McKneely said.

The train was not moving too fast, McKneely said. The engineer pulled the emergency brake before reaching the vehicle.

McKneely said other motorists tried to get the woman’s attention telling her to move.

McKneely said it’s possible the woman could not hear the train because of the loud music.

Definitely Toss: Too Common
Thanks, but train/car collisions are way too common. There are over 2000 train/pedestrian collisions every year in the US alone and we hear about lots of them. Aside from that, given the description of the incident it makes me wonder if this woman was suicidal given what she did, and we don't award suicides.

Definitely Keep: Honorable Mention
Bruce is certainly correct about this sort of incident being too common, and the incident here took a bit of thinking about, but here's why I decided to keep it: I've seen dozens of submissions where people attempt to "beat the train across the tracks", and I've also seen dozens of cases where the victim doesn't see/hear the train because of some sort of distraction (ie IPODs and the like). But I've NEVER seen an incident where someone just deliberately parks on the tracks and THEN turns up the volume. Yes, children were endangered, but neither they nor the man who was also a passenger attempted to flee the vehicle or beat common sense into the woman. Perhaps we have a whole family's worth of stupidity to weed out here! Whatever the case, it is a new variation on an old theme, so I elected to keep it!

Definitely Toss: Other
I have to vote to toss; this is unusual, but the age of the children isn't stated in any article I can find, and if they're under 16, this has to be an automatic toss.

Definitely Toss: Other
I agree with Candi we have to toss without further evidence

Definitely Toss: Not Amusing
I feel there was a story behind this, and I'm not sure it's going to be that amusing!
