No draining when it's raining

2011 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Down in Hackham, a Southern outskirts suburb of Adelaide, is a twin RCP (Round Concrete Pipe) now known as "Honeypot Road," for the location of its downstream end, or "Facebook Drain," for the following incident.

"Draining" is an almost iconic South Australian recreation, and the fact that a pair of girls, one ten, the other twelve, were out without their parents' knowledge isn't even slightly alarming. The first rule of draining however, even more important than "Make sure someone knows where you're going" is "No draining when it's raining."

It was an overcast Sunday night, the entire week having rain forecast. Honeypot Road (the drain, not the actual road) has only one practical entry, and it's clearly signed "DANGER: PIPES SUBJECT TO FLASH FLOODING." This particular drain shares two things of interest in common with most other Adelaide drains: It isn't overly easy to get lost in, and UHF radio waves don't penetrate most sections. A message appeared on Facebook later that night, posted from a mobile phone by the aforementioned pair of girls. A broadcast for help after the clouds had broken and water levels were rising.

One of their friends happened to quickly notice the girls' status message, and contacted emergency services through the proper channel. For this reason, neither girl qualifies for a true Darwin Award. This was before I was attached to the State Emergency Services, and so I wasn't one of the ones who had to retrieve the girls. But a hard copy of news coverage of the incident was posted at the site as a reminder to future explorers to check the weather conditions.
