Chlorine Bomb

2011 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

From the Asbury Park Press: BEACHWOOD — A plastic container exploded as four juveniles were mixing chemicals together Tuesday evening leaving one of the juveniles with a minor injury, police said.

The four boys, ranging in age from 13 to 17, were mixing together chemicals, including chlorine, into a water jug-like closed container when the explosion occurred around 8 p.m. Tuesday at a residence in the 500 block of Beach Avenue, according to Police Chief William Cairns.

A 17-year-old boy was injured by the explosion. He was taken to Community Medical Center in Toms River where he was treated and released with burns to his face, chest and arms, Cairns said.

Three of the teens were from the borough and one was from neighboring Toms River, Cairns said.

The incident remains under investigation, and no charges have been filed against any of the boys, Cairns said.

Borough police, fire and first aid squad, along with the New Jersey State Police bomb squad and the Berkeley HazMat team each responded to the scene, Cairns said.

From nj1015.net: A Beachwood teen is rushed to the hospital following a large chemical explosion last night. The incident occurred on Beach Avenue where neighbors say they heard a loud boom that shook their houses. The teen was rushed to the hospital after reportedly sustaining burns to his face and chest.

Former Mayor Hal Morris says "there were four kids that were playing around making chlorine bombs and one went off and it was a very very large explosion and the young man that did it got hurt really bad."

Morris says the loud explosion was actually the second of two last night.

Residents were told to stay indoors hours after the incident to allow chemical fumes to dissipate. Police, fire, hazmat, bomb squad and e-m-s responded to the scene.

Police Chief William Cairns says the injured teen was released from the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Cairns also adds that the scene has been cleared and there is no public health risk to residents.

Chief Cairns believe the kids may have learned to how to make bombs on the internet. His advice to parents .. "to pay attention to what your kids are doing on the internet and certainly make them aware of the dangers of this type of thing."

The investigation is on going.

Definitely Toss: Too Common
Thanks, Jonathan, but we get lots of stories involving kids getting injured from homemade bombs, fireworks, etc. This sort of thing is extremely commonplace these days, especially thanks to tv shows and movies like Jackass.

What Bruce said. Also, our cutoff age is 16, and this might violate the hurt bystanders rule.
