Soldier wounds wife while cleaning

2011 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Late Sunday night in an East Anchorage apartment building, a young soldier cleaning his .45-caliber semiautomatic pistol accidentally fired it, according to police. The bullet hit his wife, passing through her breast, then through the floor of the apartment into the unit below, police said.

This is an accidental shooting with a twist.

In that lower unit, Steve Brawn, 21, was sitting on his couch, watching television and getting ready to go to bed.

He heard the shot, looked up, spotted a hole in his ceiling and caught a glimpse of the bullet coming down.

"It was pretty simultaneous, the sound and the bullet," Brawn said. "It had slowed down enough where I could kind of see it out of the corner of my eye."

The bullet landed on a chair about 6 feet from where he was sitting. A puff of drywall dust rose into the air.

He called his father, Jerry Brawn, who told him to call police, which he did at 10:43 p.m. He said he went to the upstairs apartment but no one answered. The complex is on the 6000 block of East DeBarr Road.

Sgt. Pablo Paiz said he spoke to Steve Brawn while waiting for another officer to arrive. Just before 11 p.m., the police headed upstairs. They cleared out neighboring apartments. They knocked on the door of the unit in which they thought the shooting had happened and called out "Police!" No one answered.

"We kick the door in, and we find what we find," Paiz said. There was military camouflage clothing on the floor and "a number of weapons" in the living room, he said. Police also found an expended .45 cartridge.

But no people.

Paiz noticed the names "Kyle" and "Bailey" written on a white board.

About the same time, at 11:03 p.m., police received another call, from a man reporting that his wife had been shot. Paiz asked the names. Kyle and Bailey.

"I said, 'Hey!' ... I think there's a connection here,' " Paiz said.

They were Kyle Labrosse, 21, and his wife, Bailey, 20, both active-duty Army soldiers. They are specialists in the 4th Airborne Brigade Team, 25th Infantry Division, according to Chuck Canterbury, a spokesman for the Army in Alaska.

Police said that after Labrosse shot his wife, he became fearful of what the accident would do to his military career.

"Instead of calling police, he panicked and he made up a story that they were over at the Point Woronzof area and they had been the victims of an attempted robbery," police spokeswoman Anita Shell said.

They went there to look at the stars, he told police.

But police already knew there was no robber.

Police met the couple in the parking lot of Turnagain Elementary School. Police said Labrosse changed his story and acknowledged the shooting had happened in the apartment. He said he had been cleaning weapons, preparing to go to the shooting range. He was standing and his wife was on the couch, police said.

The guns must be his own because soldiers aren't allowed to take military weapons home, Canterbury said.

Police took Labrosse to police headquarters. He was charged with third-degree assault and third-degree weapons misconduct, police said.

Bailey Labrosse was treated at a hospital and released, police said. The injury was just a flesh wound. But her husband's behavior was reckless, the sergeant said.

"This is somebody who is trained in the use of weapons, how to handle weapons, how to manipulate weapons. Yet he does it in an unsafe manner," Paiz said. "It's just a miracle that she wasn't shot in the head."

Thanks, but the wife is considered a hurt bystander since she had absolutely nothing to do with getting shot.
