WW2 Jeep Vs. Flood Water

2011 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

I am an avid WW2 re-enactor and have been for several years. April 2010 myself and several members of my "unit" did an event just inside Ft. Campbell, Kentucky where I am currently stationed. In April 2010 Kentucky got some of the worst flooding it has seen in years, and the event took place on the day of the rainstorm that caused it.

Midway through the day, we decided to call it quits due to the amount of rain and some of the guys complaining about how wet they were getting. So, after drying off a little bit, myself and a couple of others piled into a buddy's truck, while 4 of the other participants piled into a vintage WW2 army issued jeep one of the group had brought out for the event.

On the road back to where we had staged our personal vehicles, we came across a low point in the road where the creek had overflowed with about two feet of water. The truck (a Ford F250) that myself and the three others were in made it across without issue. The jeep (showing at least SOME common sense) stopped just before the flooded area.

At this point, the four occupants of the truck got out, myself included. The jeep, still stopped just before the flood, started to back up. The driver of the truck asked what the four in the jeep were doing.

The reply came: "Screw it we can make it!"

With a revving of the engine, the driver of the jeep slammed on the gas and powered into the flood water. The jeep only stood about 5' tall.

The jeep began sliding across the road and everyone from the Ford could only look on at this insanity. Just before the jeep was pushed off of the side of the road, the tires caught again and the jeep slipped out of the flood water. The occupants of the jeep all let out cries of triumph... and the driver, white as a sheet, let out a relieved laugh and said: "there. Told you so!" I've seen the driver since and will NEVER stop ribbing him for his idiocy.

Definitely Toss: Too Common
Thanks for an amusing story, Ian, but this sort of idiocy is extremely common, and one could also argue that the passengers in the jeep are innocent bystanders whose lives are in the hands of the driver. But to show just how common this sort of thing is, check out the video in this submission that we just recently accepted into the slush pile: http://www.darwinawards.com/slush/new/pending20110324-083043.html
