a lesson in the location of markets

2011 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

in 1996 between 225-370 people died when a plane slid off the end of a runway in africa. it is generally accepted 348 people died. suprisingly 346 were on the ground!

now you may ask. how does a plane (which happened to be a twin engined propeller plane with 22 on board) slide off a runway and somehow kill 346 people on the ground? well the brilliant people in the market situated it at the very end of the runway, so when the overloaded plane slid off the runway it hit the market.

those 346 people deserve darwin awards.

this was not the biggest, nor smallest market in the vicinity of the town. they could easily have gone to a different market.

or they could have moved the market to the left or right, or at least left a 100 foot gap between stalls in the middle.

in 2007 another plane, of the exact same model did the exact same thing and killed 51 people.

Definitely Toss: Bystanders Hurt
Sorry, but the responsibility lies both with the people who sited the market there and those who chose to overload the plane. Everyone else is a hurt bystander. Thanks anyway, Zachary, and submit again!

Definitely Toss: No Self-Selection
On top of what Candi said, I suggest you go take a look at modern airports. Many of them are in highly populated areas with highways, buildings, etc. located very close to the end of runways. Check out some of the busiest US airports in Google Maps and you'll see this. People who are driving by or working in buildings off the end of runways aren't responsible for the human or mechanical failures that cause airplane crashes. Thanks just the same.
