Surrey man, 76, killed cutting tree

2011 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

A Surrey man is dead after he was crushed by a tree he was cutting in his backyard.

The mishap occurred about 11:30 a.m. PT Wednesday in the 17700 block of 97th Avenue.

The victim, who was 76, was on a ladder while cutting a branch about 30 cm in diameter when it fell on top of the man and killed him, RCMP spokesman Cpl. Drew Grainger said.

"The examination of the scene shows that this gentleman was operating a chainsaw with little training, trying to cut a branch at a very unusual spot, which would clearly indicate the inexperience," Grainger said.

The man was declared dead at the scene.

No names have been released.

Definitely Toss: Lacks Excellence
Sorry, James, but this sounds like no more then an unfortunate accident. Thanks anyway, and submit again!

Definitely Toss: Too Common
Aside from what Candi said, this sort of thing is also quite common. We get lots of stories involving accidents while cutting down trees. It's actually a rather hazardous thing to do given the unpredictability of how trees might break apart and in which direction they might fall. Thanks just the same.
