kayaker dies at lumbreck falls

2010 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Remembered for living life to the fullest, friends are mourning the loss of an active and experienced kayaker who died when he plunged over a waterfall on the Crowsnest River.

Jaron Kooperberg, 29, was kayaking with two friends on the Crowsnest River near Lundbreck, Alta., when he intentionally went over the Lundbreck Falls, a 12 metre drop, and was forced under the swift moving water about 5 p.m. Sunday.

He was did not resurface for 10 minutes.

Crowsnest Pass RCMP Const. Melanie Sokoloski said a friend who walked down to the base of the falls via a trail and was waiting for Kooperberg witnessed the tragic plunge and rushed to help along with other paddlers in the area.

“The fellow at the bottom pulled him out of the water and got him to a flat spot and resuscitation efforts were made by them and EMS,” she said.

He was taken to Pincher Creek hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Kooperberg, who was participating in a kayaking festival with his friends at the time, was an experienced paddler who is believed to have gone over the falls in the past along with other waterfalls, Sokoloski said.

Aside from his passion for the outdoors, Kooperberg was also a former member of the U of C Dinos wrestling team and played soccer, said friend Andy Hutchinson who has known him for 10 years and remembers him as a hard worker who lived life to its fullest.

“He definitely lived life,” he said.

“He was an energetic guy, he was a great guy.

“He liked to challenge himself.”

But while an avid outdoorsman, Kooperberg was never reckless, said friend Jeremy Chivers, who was in shock after hearing the news.

“He’s not a reckless guy—he knows what he’s doing,” he said.

“This is unbelievable.”

Chivers, who plays for the same Lads Club 1 soccer team, described Kooperberg as a man who was athletic and was very close with his family.

“He was a good looking, super athletic, super smart, perfect guy,” he said.

“He was always out mountain biking or playing soccer.”

He said Kooperberg had also just moved in with his girlfriend.

Sorry, Kevin, but this sounds like a tragic accident to me; there is nothing to indicate this poor fellow did anything to encourage this. Thanks anyway, and submit again!

As Candi said. The article said he was experienced and wasn't reckless, so this sounds more like an unfortunate accident than anything else.
