Cat(Burglar) on a Wet Tin Roof

2009 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

HE HAD ropes, a harness, a ladder and break-in tools but apparently this alleged would-be thief forgot to arm himself with a weather forecast. Perhaps his next crime should be stealing forecasts from the Bureau of Meteorology!

The frightened man was the subject of a rescue operation costing taxpayers thousands of dollars after he got stuck on a wet, slippery roof.

It took ambulance officers, firefighters and police - assisted by a cherry-picker and the Polair helicopter - three hours in the pouring rain to bring him down to safety.

But while the rescue operation cost taxpayers plenty, police said the man would not have to pay a cent because they had a duty of care to save him.

Police were called to the three-storey joinery factory in Moore St, Leichhardt, about 1.50am yesterday.

"A couple of residents in the vicinity reported seeing him. Police went around with their torches and found him," Inspector Dave Firth said.

The man had allegedly been trying to break into the factory but, because of the heavy rain on the sloping metal roof, he was stuck where he was.

A spokesman said the Police Rescue Squad was called in but it was deemed too risky to climb on to the roof.

Police then called firefighters, who tried to save the man with a ladder but it wasn't high enough. Finally, a cherry-picker had to be brought in.

A 53-year-old has been charged with trespassing, possessing a house-breaking implement and attempted break and enter.

He has yet to be charged with endangering his impact on the Human Gene Pool.

Definitely Toss: No Self-Selection
Thanks, Michael, but after seeing the photos associated with this story I'm inclined to toss this. It doesn't look like the guy was ever in any serious trouble and just sat around on a rooftop waiting for the cherry picker to retrieve him.
