Hobbton bombers to face federal time By Chris Berendt Published:

Friday, December 19, 2008 3:02 PM US/eastern RALEIGH — Two men who detonated a homemade bomb outside the Hobbton schools earlier this year have pleaded guilty to felony weapons charges in federal court and could face up to a decade in prison as a result.

Martin Bryant Boyette, 35, and Julio Frentez Morales, 26, both of Clinton, each pleaded guilty Wednesday in U.S. District Court to being a felon in possession of a firearm. Sentencing in the case is scheduled for March 2009, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Both face a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment followed by up to three years of supervised release and a fine of $250,000.

A federal grand jury indicted the two men exactly three months after the two manufactured and detonated the explosive device in a botched scare tactic targeted at a rival boyfriend on April 30.

Boyette and Morales manufactured the device and were on their way to the residence of Boyette’s ex-girlfriend’s current boyfriend because Boyette’s ex-girlfriend had been complaining to him about her current boyfriend’s abusive treatment.

However, as the two drove by the targeted residence, the carbon dioxide cartridge prematurely exploded as Morales attempted to throw it out the van window. Morales sustained severe injuries, and the two rushed to Sampson Regional Medical Center to receive immediate treatment. A call came in to Sampson County Sheriff’s authorities about the nature of the injuries, and they began to investigate the matter.

Investigators noted “catastrophic damage” to Morales’ hand and severe injuries to driver Boyette’s head as a result of the explosion.

Sheriff’s officials said at the time that eight staples had to be inserted into Boyette’s head to close a large gash opened from a piece of shrapnel from the bomb. Morales was missing large pieces of three of his fingers.

“We are fortunate that no innocent victim was injured,” said U.S. Attorney George E.B. Holding.

Sheriff Jimmy Thornton shared similar sentiments in the hours following the incident.

“It’s scary to think that these individuals were going to throw an explosive device out of a vehicle in front of a school,” Thornton said. “What were they thinking? What possible thrill could be worth potentially injuring an innocent person, especially a child?”

Holding said the case was adopted as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, which encourages all law enforcement agencies to cooperate in a unified effort against gun crimes, specifically targeting federal efforts at repeat offenders. The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office.

“Our Project Safe Neighborhoods Program is designed to address the threat posed by convicted felons and other armed and potentially violent criminals,” said Holding. “This case clearly raises real concerns in that it involved individuals making their own explosives.”

If the men are deemed career criminals, the maximum penalty could increase to a sentence of life in prison.

Morales and Boyette have more than a dozen prior convictions each, nearly all of which have been in Sampson County. Morales has 13 previous convictions and Boyette has 15 — two in Johnston — on his record, according to the N.C. Department of Corrections.

The convictions against the men include offenses such as assault inflicting serious injury, assault on a female and assault on an officer, as well as larceny and breaking and entering.

Definitely Toss: Not Amusing
Here's a somewhat clearer link: www.wral.com/news/local/story/2820701/ This strikes me more as disgusting than funny. Also, I have a feeling in my gut there's more here than meets the eye, between the perps' long records and the ex-girlfriend. And bomb's are chancy anyway. Sorry, and submit again!

Aside from what Candi said, people making their own bombs is fairly common, especially now that you can find out all about how to make different kinds of bombs on the internet.
