THE Wirral Globe is this week backing a campaign to support the devastated family of a man killed on a dangerous Wirral road.

Heartbroken friends and relatives of ambitious Christian John Ruffley gathered at the spot where he was killed to remember the talented 23-year-old.

An inquest held last week ruled that the father-of-one died of multiple injuries after a car ran over him and crushed his chest on Lever Causeway, Storeton on March 25.

The campaign: A Light for Christian will call for street lighting to be put in place on the causeway on which three people have died in car crashes in the last ten years.

The campaign had the backing of local councillors, safety campaigners and Radio City presenter Pete Price.

And Christian's stepfather Paul Sherlock gave his heartfelt thanks to the Globe for offering his family a glimmer of hope after they have spent "months at the depths of dispair." advertisement

Bebington councillor Walter Smith branded the straight mile-long road as "dangerous," and one Storeton resident said she was "petrified of living in the constant shadow of that terrible road."

Christian, from Kirkland Avenue, Tranmere had been out drinking with friends and was found to be lying in the carriageway when a taxi ran over him at 60mph, killing him instantly.

In an emotional tribute to her "beautiful" son, his mum Hayley Buckley said that Christian's death could have been prevented if the road was well-lit and there were more traffic-calming measures in place.

Just days after the tragedy, the family were given the news that Christian had passed his exams and would have sailed into his dream job as a counsellor.

"One of the most precious people in my life has been snatched away from me," said Hayley.

"My son made me so proud and I would give my life to bring him back.

"By now it would have been the start of a promising career for Christian - his dream was to help others but he didn't get the chance to receive his brilliant news.

Cllr Walter Smith said that there are already speed rest-riction measures in the pipeline for Lever Causeway.

"There has been a great deal of dangerous driving down that road over the years," he said.

"I will whole-heartedly support the Globe in the campaign to introduce street lights."

RoadPeace activist Pauline Fielding, whose 18-year-old son was killed 13 years ago, has successfully fought for traffic calming measures on the A450 Chester High Road.

She said: "I would support any action that would help to save lives and prevent any further deaths and injuries on our roads.

"Christian's family will get great strength from fighting to make the road safer for other pedestrians and road users."

Radio City's Pete Price is also backing our Light for Christian campaign and a jam night will take place in his memory at the Life Café, Price Street, Birkenhead, at 7pm, on October 28.

Christian's auntie Alison Hodgson said that her nephew was a talented musician who was inspired by hip-hop.

He even penned rap songs and recorded them in a sound studio - one of which will be played at the charity night by Birkenhead keyboardist Glyn Williams.

She described Christian as as sensitive and perfect and said that he will be sadly missed.

Christian leaves behind a daughter Penny, and siblings Rachel, Aaron, Laura and Ben.

A video posted on self-broadcast website YouTube less than one month after Christian's death shows a car racing down the road at horrifying speeds and ignoring the many slow signs.

The video-maker even acknowledges that "the road has claimed many lives" but still seems undeterred.

Roadpeace North West will be holding a memorial service in aid of road crash victims in Liverpool on November 18.

The event will take place at 1pm, in St John's Gardens.

A remembrance service will also be held at 3pm, at Liverpool Parish Church.

Thanks for sending this in, Ruth, but there seems to be absolutely no evidence of self-selection, much less stupidity. By all accounts, the poor bloke was walking home from the pub (as we've ALL done; there's no evidence that he was SO intoxicated that he couldn't walk in a relatively straight line) when he was struck by a hit and run driver (who obviously didn't see him, or if he did just kept on going). Rather sad, actually...
