LUMUT: Shopkeeper Th’ng Boon Siang died of asphyxiation and self-inflicted wounds sustained while performing an auto-erotic act on himself, said Ipoh Hospital forensic expert Dr Muhammad Shafie Othman@Osman.

He also ruled out any criminal element or the involvement of a third party in the death of the 41-year-old man, who was found dead on the floor of a back room on the ground floor of his Manjung sundry shop on May 29, 2003.

"In my professional opinion, he died of auto-erotic asphysia while performing the (sexual) act (bondage) for self-gratification and hence can be classified as accidental death.

"All the knots were connected to one another and the tautness could be controlled by the deceased by extending his wrists and straightening his legs," he said at the inquest into Th’ng’s death in the Manjung magistrate’s court yesterday.

Th’ng’s wife, Ang Kim Hong, found his body on the floor of a back room on the ground floor of their shop about 7.30am.

He was frothing at the mouth and his face and two fingers on his right hand were swollen.

His hands and legs were tied with raffia and nylon string and there was also a piece of string around his neck.

His handphone, wedding ring, a necklace and a locket, and RM5,000 in cash and other jewellery were reportedly missing.

The injuries on his body could have occurred as he tied himself up, said the report.

Muhammad Shafie also revealed that records gathered worldwide showed that auto-erotic acts have been known to be performed by those aged between 13 and 80.

"In such cases, they would try to achieve a natural high, or climax, by restricting the flow of oxygen (to their brain) by manipulating the tautness of these knots.

"There would usually be a discharge of semen, although this does not necessarily happen in all cases," he said, adding that this was the third such case he had come across in his nine years as a pathologist in Malaysia.

Death, he said, occurs when a person (performing an auto erotic act) fails to control the tautness of the knots once the critical level is reached.

"Time of death varies from a few seconds to several minutes depending on the tautness of the knots.

"If the knots are loosened before critical level, there is a chance of survival," he said.

The inquest before magistrate T. Sunita Kaur Jessy continues on July 27.

I don't see anything out of the ordinary as far as auto-erotic asphyxiation goes. I also wonder if there was some foul play since it was reported his valuables were missing.
