Two men electrocuted to death in Tyngsborough

TYNGSBOROUGH, Mass.- Two people are dead, believed to be electrocuted in a botched attempt to steal wire from the rear of an abandoned building Wednesday afternoon, police said. Firefighters found the two white men lying unconscious in a fenced-in high-voltage area behind the former Hussey Plastics at 65 Middlesex Road after a fire alarm there triggered at about 3 p.m., Tyngsborough police dispatcher Patrick Timmerman said.

Firefighters immediately called Patriot Ambulance crews to the scene as well National Grid officials who arrived and cut power to the area allowing the medical crews to reach the men, Timmerman said.

Both men were declared dead at the scene, he said, and their bodies were taken to the state medical examiner's office.

Neither of the men had authorization to be on the property, police said.

Investigators believe the men were attempting to take wire from the closed property and at some point in the process, cut a live wire that was connected to the building. A pile of newly cut wire was near a truck that belonged to one of the men, police said.

Police did not identify either man Wednesday night.

STEPHANIE HOOPER Telegraph Staff

TYNGSBOROUGH, Mass. - Two men, one from Nashua, are dead, electrocuted Wednesday afternoon in what police believe was a botched attempt to steal wire from the rear of an abandoned building. Roland Farland, 58, of 44 Lynn St., was pronounced dead after firefighters found him and another man lying near a live cut wire behind the former Hussey Plastics at 65 Middlesex Road, police said.

Firefighters found Farland and the other man, who has not been identified, lying unconscious in a fenced-in high-voltage area behind the building after a fire alarm there triggered at about 3 p.m., Tyngsborough police dispatcher Patrick Timmerman said.

Firefighters immediately called Patriot Ambulance crews to the scene, as well as National Grid officials, who arrived and cut power to the area allowing the medical crews to reach the Farland and the other man, Timmerman said.

Both men were declared dead at that time and their bodies were later taken to the state medical examiner's office.

Neither of the men had authorization to be on the property, police said.

Investigators believe the men were attempting to take wire from the closed property and at some point in the process, cut a live wire that was connected to the building. A pile of newly cut wire was near a truck that belonged to one of the men, police said.

Detectives identified Farland soon after and notified his family. The other man did not have identification on him.

Tyngsborough Detective Sgt. Shawn Wagner is investigating the case, Timmerman said.

State police, working with the Middlesex District Attorney's office, are also involved in the investigation.

Thanks for spending the time to track down several references for this story, Ed. Unfortunately death by copper theft is the most common story we get these days and way to common to make it to these pages.
