North Durham police force loses one of its own

Constable Greg Hearn struck, killed by sled on Lake Scugog

Mar 12, 2007

SCUGOG -- North Durham's police detachment is mourning the loss of one its own after a veteran off-duty officer was killed last Friday evening while tracking the speed of a friend's sled on the northern reaches of Lake Scugog.

According to Ontario Provincial Police officials based in the City of Kawartha Lakes, Durham police Constable Greg Hearn was using a radar gun to track the speed of a friend's snowmobile when the sled slammed into him at a high rate of speed just before 9 p.m. on March 9.

Const. Hearn, 41, was pronounced dead at the scene, as was David White, 45, the driver of the snowmobile. Both men resided in the Little Britain area.

Police say that the two men were driving their snowmobiles on the lake near Sandbar Road, southwest of Lindsay, when they decided to check the speed of one of their sleds with a radar device.

"It's been a very tough weekend," said Inspector Bruce Townley, who heads up the North Durham detachment of the Durham Regional Police Service. "He was an outstanding officer, the type that you wish you had 10 of. He was down to earth... he earned his pay cheque every day, he came to work every day. He was an outstanding individual, both professionally and as a man."

Const. Hearn joined the Durham service in 2002 after starting his career in 1988 with the Toronto Police Service.

"He was committed to his family, his family meant everything to him," continued Insp. Townley. "He obviously enjoyed water and ice in the winter and that was his life outside of policing. It was an extremely tragic incident that took his life."

The inspector noted that those on Const. Hearn's shift and platoon are "taking it in stride, it's a difficult time for them" but stressed that the northern detachment "will forge ahead... these things do happen and it's time for us to be strong for his wife and kids.

"This is the worst thing that can happen to a family and for us as his extended family we're dealing with the death of one of our own," said Insp. Townley. "He's part of our family and it's like we've lost one of our own."

A viewing for Const. Hearn will be held at the Lindsay Armouries, 210 Kent St. West, on March 13 from 7 to 9 p.m., as well as from 3 to 5 p.m. and again from 7 to 9 p.m. on March 14. A funeral service will follow on March 15 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 40 Russell St., East in Lindsay, at 11 a.m.

The funeral will not be a formal police funeral.

Lake Scugog, Ont. - A snowmobile accident on Lake Scugog Friday night claimed the lives of two men, including an off-duty Durham region police officer.

According to CTV News, police said Const. Greg Hearn, 41, and David White, 44, drove on separate snowmobiles to the lake with a plan to test the speed of their machines.

Police said Hearn was standing on the ice, using a radar gun to clock the speed of White's snowmobile.

The test took a tragic turn before 9 p.m. when the snowmobile, driven by White, collided with Hearn on the ice, killing both men at the scene.

One unconfirmed news report said White was driving the snowmobile at speeds up to 210 km/h at the time of the accident.

An eyewitness to the crash told CTV News racing snowmobiles is a common practice.

Hearn began his policing career in June 1988 with the Toronto police as a court officer, and then served as a police constable with the York Regional Police Service. He joined the Durham Regional Police Service in 2002.

This incident is being investigated by the city of Kawartha Lakes OPP.
