Greg Hearn and David White loved snow and speed.

But they became a deadly combination that claimed the men's lives in a bizarre snowmobile accident on Lake Scugog Friday night.

Hearn, a 41-year-old constable with Durham Region police, was off duty and using a radar gun to time the speed of fellow snowmobilers when White, 45, slammed into him at what witnesses estimated was more than 200 km/h.

Both men, residents of the Little Britain area north of Port Perry, died at the scene.

One man who witnessed the accident told reporters it was like watching "a horror movie" as the snow machine collided with Hearn and knocked him several metres across the frozen lake.

"He loved the speed," said White's younger brother, Jim, 43. "They all love their snowmobiles up here.

"It's always about who can go faster. It passes the time because up here there's not a heck of a lot to do in the winter."

Jim White said his brother, Hearn and several other people were out on the lake near the foot of Sand Bar Rd. at about 9 p.m. Friday when the accident occurred.

"It was too dark to be racing," he said yesterday, adding he never went out on the lake with his brother "because it was too fast."

"I have a snowmobile, but it's slow and I can take my daughter all day long on the paths on the fields around here," White said. "But David loved what he did. He loved the speed."

David White's daughter, Samantha, 23, agreed.

"He would never let me go out there with him because he said it was too fast for me," she said.

Family and friends gathered at White's home and the lakeside home of Hearn on nearby Washburn Island. Hearn leaves a wife and two teenaged children.

Hearn began his career as a court officer with Toronto police in 1988, later serving as a constable in York Region before joining the Durham force in 2002. He worked in northern 15 Division.

Hearn was attacked by a prisoner who tried to escape on his way to North York court in 1995. The prisoner had removed his leg shackles and handcuffs in a patrol wagon and used the cuffs to strike Hearn in the throat when he jumped out at the courthouse. Hearn was treated and released from hospital.

"He was dedicated and very down to earth," Durham Insp. Bruce Townley said yesterday. "He was the kind of officer you wish you had 10 of.

"We're all devastated by his tragic death."

The stupidity here isn't really enough to trigger my Darwinometer, and in the end there is arguably no self-selection either, as the lake in question is plenty large enough for this sort of thing.
