How not to steal a car

Police ID body found in canal Friday, February 02, 2007 By RON COLQUITT Staff Reporter

The man whose body was found Wednesday washed up behind a Dauphin Island Parkway business was John Terrell Calvin, who stole a car last month and plunged it into the Theodore Industrial Canal, Mobile police said Thursday.

Calvin, whose body was found on rocks along the same canal, had stolen the newer model Nissan Maxima on Jan. 15 at a DIP gas station and driven it into the water as police chased him, police said.

Mobile-area temperatures that night ranged in the upper 50s, according to National Weather Service information.

Nakia Thomas, Calvin's common-law wife, had told Mobile police she believed it was him because Calvin disappeared the night the car went into the canal.

The Nissan was found in 18 feet of murky water on the north bank of the canal the morning after it went into the water. The body was found nearby 16 days later on the south bank.

According to Thomas, she and Calvin had been living together for about 10 years. Calvin would have turned 32 on Thursday, she said.

Though saddened by the loss, Thomas said she was relieved that Calvin's body had been found. Calvin is the father of her 7-year-old daughter, she said.

"It's closure," she said. "I just pretty much wanted to find a body, more so for my daughter so we could be at peace."

Funeral arrangements had not been made Thursday, but Calvin most likely will be buried in Mississippi, Thomas said.

Officer John Young, a Mobile police spokesman, said the car's owner apparently left the ignition key in the Maxima when he got out at the station in the 2900 block of DIP.

A man jumped in the car about 10 p.m. and drove it away, the spokesman said.

Officer Eric Gallichant, another Mobile police spokesman, said the chase had begun about 11 p.m., when a police officer spotted the Maxima, which had just been reported stolen.

The officer chased the Maxima along San Marino Drive to DIP and lost it near Deer River Road by the canal, Gallichant said.

He said workers in the area told police they saw the car plunge into the canal. There were no skid marks leading up to the red and white painted metal barrier that the car crashed through before plunging into the murky water.

Thomas said Calvin was disabled because he had been shot in the upper left leg.

He had a long pin in that area of his left leg, and it was the old wound and the description of the clothes he was wearing the night of his disappearance that helped identify him, she said.

Thomas said that Calvin could swim, but he probably didn't know DIP abruptly ended at the canal.

Calvin was an easygoing man who got around by foot or on his bicycle, she said. She last saw him alive about 7:30 p.m. at their home on Daytona Drive off DIP within walking distance of the gasoline station where the car was stolen.

"We were at home. The last I saw him he was out on the back porch having a beer. He was out by himself, nobody was out there," she said.

Thomas described Calvin as a "real friendly guy" who made a little money cutting grass for people in the neighborhood.

His dream was to be a famous rap star, she said.

"Today would have been his birthday. I'm in a depressed state right now, I really am," Thomas said.

Thanks, Dave, but this is a dumbcrooks story and one of a felon being chased by the Law. Thanks for submitting though

Yes, quite dramatic, but a dumb crook story nonetheless. This could make a good 30 minute TV crime drama, however! Thanks for the submission, Dave!
