Police interview on WSPD radio reports that man was attempting to steal wrought iron roof supports for scrap metal when he became pinned by the falling roof of the abandoned house.

This has to be a brilliant case of cleaning the genetic pool on the shallow end, how else do you explain prying loose the roof pillars while placing oneself in a position to be injured, in this case fatally? While the price of scrap metal has risen substantially in the last few months any 14 year old would know better than this 41 year old nominee.

January 4, 2007 - Police investigating why man was at the vacant house. Family members are in shocked.

A man died in north Toledo this morning after a porch roof collapsed on top of him.

Emergency crews rushed to the 1100 block of Elm Street near Sherman Avenue around 4:30 this morning.

Officials say Marvin Dixon, 41, was standing on the porch when the roof gave way, trapping him underneath.

It took a 30-person rescue team nearly 15 minutes to lift the roof and free the man.

Hospital officials at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center say Dixon died after arriving at the hospital.

Witnesses tell 13 ABC that the home was condemned.

Police are still investigating the cause of the collapse.

Dixon's death came as a total shock to his family and friends. Relatives say they do not know what Dixon was doing on that porch this morning but they say he was a good man and they are stunned by his death.

Marvin Dixon's loved ones gathered at the scene of his death looking for answers.

"We're upset about the whole situation and how everything went down. As far as we know, we do not know the full facts. Eventually we will but everybody is holding up."

Stunned friends and family tried to find comfort in each other. They set up a makeshift memorial of flowers and stuffed animals. Relatives say Dixon died not far from his own home. According to reports, he was trying to steal iron supports from the abandoned house. His nephew says he is not sure why Dixon was banging on the porch, but he does not think he was doing anything illegal.

"He was down on his luck. He was not a thief or criminal."

Dixon's family members say there are many abandoned homes in the area and the city needs to try to protect local residents.

Dixon leaves behind one daughter. The family is still working on funeral arrangements.

We've already received this, but the extra detail has me thinking. A 41 year old should know better than to enter a condemned site in in any case, but a chimp probably knows not to steal iron supports while standing under whatever those supports are supporting! When the late indigent's family suggested the city should be more responsible, I instantly clicked into "I LIKE this" mode! Trying to shift personal responsibility to society is a sure way to get me to vote in favor of a DA!

I didn't see the original submission, but I vote to toss because of the reasons that James gave to keep - trying to shift blame makes me say "Toss!"

Not much new here, and the idea that he was trying to steal the iron is definitely unsubstantiated. I found nothing amusing about this either. But thanks for submitting the story.
