Explosion victim 'had lighter'

2006 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

THE city cafe owner killed in an explosion this week was found by emergency services workers with a lighter in his hand.

As police yesterday said they were weeks away from making any official ruling about what caused the explosion early on Tuesday, police sources told The Advertiser petrol jerry cans remained the items of greatest interest to investigators.

It is understood a large quantity of petrol used to douse part of the floor of the building at 121 Pirie St would be sufficient to cause such a significant blast as the petrol dried and fumes vapourised with oxygen. As soon as the petrol was ignited, the blast would be almost instant.

A source closely linked to the investigation into the explosion said that when the body of JP's Cafe owner Frank Levato, 49, was found under rubble at the rear of the building, he was clutching a lighter.

Mr Levato, a popular family and businessman from Glynde who had once owned four hairdressing salons across Adelaide, bought the cafe last year from Michael Pashalidis, of Unley, and Roland Gianakis, of Toorak Gardens.

Police are still investigating Mr Levato's finances.

Mr Gianakis last night declined to answer questions about the financial state of the cafe when Mr Levato bought it.

"That is irrelevant," Mr Gianakis told The Advertiser. "At this stage, I don't want to answer any questions until I know the full story of what happened."

Mr Pashalidis did not return calls last night.

Police Superintendent Paul Schramm yesterday said it would take at least two weeks, maybe longer, for the cause of Tuesday's blast to be known.

Police and fire investigators were examining evidence yesterday, he said. Police believe Mr Levato was alone at the time of the blast.

A report is being prepared by police for the coroner, but Supt Schramm said that will not be finished for many months.

Mr Levato's family - his widow Lucy, 46, and children Paul, 25, Chantelle, 16, and Jesse, 14 - were still too distraught last night to speak publicly about their loss.

Quoth the former owner of the cafe: ..."At this stage, I don't want to answer any questions until I know the full story of what happened"...Well, I happen to agree. I can't make a sound judgement until such time as more information reveals the true cause and nature of this incident. Do please keep us posted should the information show Darwinian intent and/or content!

Thanks for the story, Neville but, as James says, there's just not enough information here.
