Pop Like a Grape
2000 Personal Account

(January 24, 2000) Joe, 20, was working at a warehouse. A delivery truck was bringing product into the warehouse. Joe watched the big 18-wheeler back up to his dock and halt about a foot away. Thinking the truck driver had stopped and stepped out of the cab, Joe leaned over the edge of the dock and stuck his head out between the truck trailer and the building, to holler out to the driver to back up a bit further. Joe didn't know that the driver was still in the cab, and was about to release the clutch one last time to ease the trailer back and gently nudge it up against the bumpers.

The truck rolled back for the final docking and pinned Joe's head against the building. Joe banged on the trailer and screamed for the driver to stop and, miraculously, he did. The driver pulled forward and Joe's co-workers made quick contact with the front office to arrange a ride to the hospital.

An examination found his skull fractured in three places. Joe reported loss of hearing in one ear and was in a great deal of pain. Thankfully, the next day he was up and walking and asking for food. Joe is recovering from his accident but will always remember his near miss with disaster. He was only a fraction of an inch from having his head pop like a grape as the 18,000 pound truck backed up to the dock.
