Tips & Tricks

Welcome to the Philosophy Forum! As you browse through the threads, you might come across a post and you say to yourself, 'Wow! How can I do that?!' Here is a guide for the fancy stuff.

Puzzling acronyms can be deciphered using the acronym list.

Formatting techniques for your posts are described on the BBcode page which is also linked on the text entry pages: look for these links below the text entry box:

Help Cards: [ Emoticons :: BBcode ]

The text entry page also has formatting buttons above of the text box. To find out what each button does, position your mouse pointer over them and read the pop-up box. How do you post pictures? Emoticons are easiest. Click on the Emoticons link to see the ones you can insert into your post with a simple text code, like :smoke or :roll . For an image found on another website, put your mouse over the image, click the right mouse button, and select "Properties".  Copy the image address. Then click the 'image' button at the top of the text entry screen, and paste (Ctrl-v) the link you've copied. If you have a picture that is not on the net, PM Okie and he will tell you what to do.

Each time you post, your post count is incremented, and you move along the evolutionary path from Stardust to Homo sapiens. The pictures that occasionally pop up beneath member names show that someone's "graduated" to the next evolutionary level. Give 'em a compliment! But no one worries about your level--we're more concerned with the lucidity of your arguments--so don't worry yourself.

And another hint for new folks - if you want to see how someone did a particular trick, hit "quote" on their post and you will be able to see all of the code in it.

Now remember, read the FAQs, especially Member Guidelines and Forum Decorum, and if you want to debate Darwin nominees, read the Rules. Armed with this knowledge, you will enjoy yourself and make many friends. Don't be a Newbie!
