NEWBERRY COUNTY, SC (WIS) - An autopsy is scheduled for a University of South Carolina student after he was hit and run over by a train.

The Newberry County Sheriff says 20-year-old Robert Chase Campbell and three of his friends were hitching a ride on the train early Wednesday morning when it happened.

It started as a joy ride. Four University of South Carolina fraternity brothers jumped onto a train at about 5:30 Wednesday morning.

The train was stopped near the Greek Village on USC's campus.

Deputies believe the plan was for the men to get off at the Amtrak station in downtown Columbia, but when they hopped on the train, it picked up speed, going so fast the men couldn't get off.

Three of them jumped off the train about 65 miles from Columbia - in Clinton.

During the journey, they told deputies at some point, their 20-year-old Sigma Nu brother, Robert Campbell, simply disappeared.

Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster said, "When deputies arrived on the scene they found an individual who was on the tracks and he was deceased when they found him."

Sheriff Foster says Campbell fell off the train in Newberry, without his friends knowing.

A train hit Campbell. He died instantly.

"Two CSX train engineers spotted the body on the tracks. They thought the person was just hurt. Investigators found out the person had already been hit by an earlier train."

Does this mean that USC (University of South Carolina) is the most Darwin Award nominated University with the inclusion of the couple who fell off a rooftop to their deaths in 2007 while making out?
