Yamashita Treasure

2008 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

In the Philippines, the search for the fabled Yamashita Treasure continues unabated despite more than a half-century of persistent non-discovery. Because of the inordinate amount of mis-adventures involving treasure hunting, the government bans unauthorized digs and confiscates treasure-hunting implements.

Two fishermen brothers in Davao however didn't heed what the government said, believing the government only wanted to discover the treasure for itself.

One day they saw a rusting tube of metal half-buried in the sand on a low-tide. They hauded it aboard their boat and inspected it. It suspiciously looked like an unexploded 500-lb bomb from World War II -- rounded on one end and square at the base. But wait a minute, they reasoned, could this be the Yamashita Treasure cunningly disguised as a bomb?

Those wily Japanese!

The brothers under cover of darkness brought the tube of heavy metal to their home without telling anyone.

That night, they debated about how best to free the treasure from within the solid metal. Finally, they agreed on the hacksaw. A cousin wisely thought that the brothers were insane and decided to sleep somewhere else that night.

At around midnight, there was a tremendous explosion heard from as far as 5 kilometers away. When the police arrived at the site, they found a crater and 2 neigboring houses totally destroyed. No remains of the brothers were recovered.

The referenced link doesn't provide any real verification of this story and I wonder about injured bystanders given that neighboring houses were totally destroyed. However in the absence of any true supporting documentation I'm willing to vote for a PA for this story. Thanks, Larry!
