Man electrocuted in theft of wire,

2008 Reader Submission

By Jennifer Palmer and Michael Kimball Staff Writers A man who apparently was trying to steal copper in northeast Oklahoma City electrocuted himself, officials said.

"That appears to be what happened,” police Capt. Lisa Camacho said.

The identity of the man, who was found Saturday, has not been released.

About 9 a.m. Saturday, Oklahoma Gas and Electric Co. crews responded to a reported power outage in the 700 block of NE 50, said Gil Broyles, OG&E spokesman.

A worker searching for the source of the outage found the body in a back yard about noon and alerted authorities.

The man apparently touched a power line with a length of metal, Broyles said.

The power line had been cut; it was not clear who severed it.

The man had been dead "for some time” when he was found, but it is unknown when he died, Oklahoma City fire Capt. Grant Roberts said.

"It is dangerous” to steal copper, Broyles said. "It's not only a problem in terms of the electrical service we attempt to provide, but it's also a problem for the people trying to steal it.”

Power to the affected area was restored, he said.

Neutral: For Darwin's Eyes
We get copper theft stories on pretty much a weekly basis so I consider these to be way too common. However Darwin has indicated that she still gets a kick out of these sorts of stories so we'll pass this on to her. Thanks.
